Giving Blind Children a New Leash on Life
There are a large number of legally blind children and adults living in North Carolina who would benefit from having a wonderful guide dog by their side. MIRA FOUNDATION USA, INC. was founded by Bob Baillie, himself a guide dog user, as a non-profit to provide guide dogs free of charge to those individuals. The youngest age at which a child can receive a guide dog in this country is 16, but we believe children as young as 11 could greatly benefit from having guide dogs so we have made it our primary focus to provide guide dogs to those children.
Having a guide dog makes a tremendous difference in a blind individual’s life and gives them the freedom and mobility to be more independent and self-reliant. They also help children assimilate in their school community because the dogs are an attraction and tend to remove the stigma often associated with blindness.
Our most urgent goal is to raise money to provide guide dogs to two individuals this year. At the same time, we are focused on the future and looking toward raising funds to build our own facility here in the sandhills.
This wonderful 5k fun run and dog walk will help us work toward our goals and we hope that you will plan to participate and support this very worthy cause. We also hope that you may consider volunteering to help us.
